A Short Biography!
The youngest of three children, I was born Wieslaw George Helon at 5.30 am on Tuesday 23 November 1965 in Bridgnorth, County of Salop (now Shropshire), England.
I was born with an extremely rare multiple anomaly pleiotropic genetic disorder known as Pallister-Hall Syndrome (PHS), which as a consequence of I am affected by (among other things) gelastic (or ‘laughing’) seizures caused by a hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) – a primary diagnostic feature of PHS. But rather than dwell on the negatives, I have focused my efforts on helping and supporting others by publicising these very conditions to the world.
My father Zbigniew ‘Alan’ Helon (1937 – 2012), a project engineer, was a Polish emigre of noble descent who, with his entire family, was deported at gunpoint in the early hours of Saturday 10 February 1940 from Krzywe – near Pawlow, Radziechow in Poland – to the slave labour camp Mucznaja near Kotlas in Siberia, Russia by the Soviet NKVD. My mother Elzbieta ‘Elizabeth’ (nee Misiura) was a stenographer; her family too were deported and exiled to Siberia – they were interned at the labour camp Ujma in the Archangelsk Oblast near the White Sea.
My family left our home in Wombourne, Staffordshire and emigrated to Australia in April 1970 to settle in Melbourne until 1992 when we moved to Bundaberg, Queensland.
Raised in the Ballarat region with my brother (Mariusz) and sister (Izabella), I attended a number of primary and secondary schools, including St Patrick’s College in Ballarat, Victoria.
I completed my secondary schooling at the School of Mines and Industries (SMB) in Ballarat.
In 1992 (through to 2000) I took-up a post as a consulting historian and cultural, research and public affairs coordinator at the Gurang Land Council (Aboriginal Corporation) in Bundaberg.
Adopted by Aboriginal Elders of the Bolgwin Clan of the Gooreng-Gooreng tribe of south-east Queensland, I was accorded the tribal name ‘Buralnyarla’ (‘White Owl’ – keeper of the knowledge) in October 1994 in recognition for the work I had done for the Aboriginal peoples of south-east Queensland.
I currently reside in Toowoomba, Queensland.
